Testing for cations and anions

My Year 12’s have been developing tests for cations and anions using common lab reagents. Once they had practised these tests, they put together a flow chart for detecting different cations on their whiteboards. Here are some examples:

  1. Very nice. Was the lab open-ended/inquiry or more structured? Were they determining or applying solubility rules to create the boards?

    • It was definitely more structured than inquiry – we’re quite pushed for time so it needed to be more directed. We’ve gone through solubility rules in the past and revisited them recently with some simple testing, so they were just taking those rules and developing a scheme that they could follow to discriminate each of the ions.
